Courage - Encinitas, CA, USA

Courage, a sculpture by artist Ilona Passino, was on display in San Diego Botanic Garden (formerly Quail Botanical Gardens) from September 12, 2009 through March 1, 2010.  It was constructed from concrete with a ceramic and stained-glass mosaic.  The 4 ft 5" by 8 ft by 3 ft 6" sculpture of a lion was part of the second annual Sculpture in the Garden exhibit, a collaboration between San Diego Botanic Garden and the San Diego Fine Art Society.

Moonlight Beach Overlook - Encinitas, CA, USA

Maintained by the City of Encinitas Parks and Recreation Department, this small bluffside park and overlook is situated just south of Moonlight State Beach.  It features a grassy area with a picnic table as well as several benches overlooking the beach and ocean.

Located at 400 Moonlight Lane at C Street.

Veterans Memorial - Encinitas, CA, USA

"These memorial walls are meant to be reminiscent of ancient walls, the shapes referring to 'the waving flag.'  Both ends of the large memorial wall are left unfinished, representing the unfinished lives of those who have perished in the line of duty.  The large monolithic stone water feature within the memorial, trickles water slowly as tears, speaking back to those who mourn. 

The ultimate goal in the design of this memorial wall is to offer a sense of quiet sympathy to the visitor, reminding those of us who take so much for granted, just how much others have given in protecting our freedoms."

"Dedicated to all those who served in the armed forces of our country.  May we never forget their unselfish devotion to the cause of our freedom."

Moonlight Beach Mural - Encinitas, CA, USA

Two murals by local marine artist Micaiah Hardison adorn the exterior wall of the Moonlight Beach 7-Eleven convenience store in Encinitas.  The larger of the two depicts Moonlight State Beach, several blocks to the west.

Located at 105 West D Street, at the intersection of D Street and South Coast Highway.  The murals are on the east wall facing South Coast Highway.

Encinitas Schoolhouse - Encinitas, CA, USA

This Classical Revival style structure was built in 1883 by E.G. Hammond and his son, Ted.  Built out of redwood with handmade square nails this one-room schoolhouse features shiplap siding.  Moved in 1927 from its original location on property deeded for a school at Third and E Streets, it was converted to a private residence.  The former schoolhouse, threatened with demolition in 1983, was returned to the property at Third and E Streets through the efforts of the Encinitas Historical Society, the Encinitas School District and members of the community.  It is situated at its approximate original location, though facing south now rather than east towards the town.  Restored, it presently houses the Encinitas Historical Society. 

Located in the alleyway behind Pacific View Elementary School, at the top of the hill west of Third Street, just north of E Street.
