San Luis Rey Elementary School - Oceanside, CA, USA

San Luis Rey Elementary School was constructed in the mid-1960s.  It is part of the Oceanside Unified School District.  Originally serving Kindergarten through the 6th grade, it now serves students through the 5th grade.

Located in the San Luis Rey Valley at 3535 Hacienda Drive, in the San Luis Rey Estates neighborhood.

E. G. Garrison Elementary School - Oceanside, CA, USA

E. G. Garrison Elementary School (aka Garrison Elementary School) was constructed in the early 1970s.  It is part of the Oceanside Unified School District.  Originally serving Kindergarten through the 6th grade, it now serves students through the 5th grade.

Located at 333 Garrison Street.

Lincoln Middle School - Oceanside, CA, USA

Built in the early 1960s this school is part of the Oceanside Union School District.   Originally called Lincoln Junior High it served grades 7 and 8.  It opened for students for the 1963-1964 school year, but construction continued through the 1965-1966 session.  Since becoming Lincoln Middle School it serves grades 6 through 8.  The campus was temporarily closed for renovations after the 2008 school year, re-opening in September 2010.

Palmquist Elementary School - Oceanside, CA, USA

Part of the Oceanside Unified School District, Palmquist Elementary School once served grades Kindergarten through 6th.  6th grade in recent years has been incorporated into the "middle schools," leaving the elementary schools with Kindergarten through 5th grades.  Built circa 1960, Palmquist Elementary School will be closed during the 2012-2013 school year for extensive renovations.  Its classes will be held at an alternate location, the former Ditmar Elementary School, during this time.

The existing buildings are currently undergoing demolition.

Rancho Minerva - Vista, CA, USA

Greek immigrant Nicholas Huntalas and his new wife, Bessie (Papsino), settled in Vista in 1916 on a 420-acre ranch where Nick had lived since acquiring it in 1911.  He built a 4-room wooden home for his new family and named the property Rancho Minerva after the Roman goddess of wisdom.  Because water was scarce people in the area dry farmed, but the newly formed Vista Irrigation District made water available in 1923 and the Huntalases became citrus and avocado growers.  After the birth of their children they built a 3400 square foot 2-story Spanish Revival style home which still stands.  Dirt from the excavation of the basement and wine cellar was used to make the adobe bricks for the home's 14-inch thick walls.  Construction began in 1933 and was completed in 1934, and the home was the center of social gatherings for the community for many years.  Eventually the property was acquired by the Vista Unified School District.  The City of Vista gained the two-acre parcel surrounding the adobe home through a land swap with the school district.  Rancho Minerva Middle School opened across Foothill Drive in 2007 on the old ranch property.  In September 2009 the Vista Historical Society entered into a 25-year lease with the City of Vista and relocated their museum to the old adobe house.

Located at 2317 Old Foothill Drive at the intersection of San Clemente Avenue.  The home is visible from Foothill Drive, directly across the street from Rancho Minerva Middle School.

Mission Elementary School - Oceanside, CA, USA

Spencer Valley School - Wynola, CA, USA

Founded in 1876 the Spencer Valley School District is one of the last remaining one-school districts in San Diego County.  The present one-room schoolhouse was built in 1905, replacing an earlier structure.  Additional buildings in a complimentary style were added in 1987 providing modern facilities.  Spencer Valley School is a public elementary school with a student population of 30-35 children.

Located at 4414 Highway 78 approximately 4 miles west of Julian.

Building Pride Through Beautification - Fallbrook, CA, USA

Building Pride Through Beautification, a mural painted in 2001 by artist Clayton Parker, is part of Fallbrook Art in Public Places.  Donated by the Fallbrook Rotary Club, it was dedicated on February 19, 2002.

Located on the east exterior wall of Fallbrook School of the Arts at 310 East Alvarado Street.

Dome Gymnasium, Palomar College - San Marcos, CA, USA

The Dome Gymnasium, known as "The Dome," was designed and built in 1958 by architect C. J. "Pat" Paderewski.  Built of brick as the rest of the college buildings were, it features a metal Buckminster Fuller designed geodesic dome roof.  The landmark structure is visible from Mission Road.  Palomar College is San Diego County's oldest Community College.

Encinitas Schoolhouse - Encinitas, CA, USA

This Classical Revival style structure was built in 1883 by E.G. Hammond and his son, Ted.  Built out of redwood with handmade square nails this one-room schoolhouse features shiplap siding.  Moved in 1927 from its original location on property deeded for a school at Third and E Streets, it was converted to a private residence.  The former schoolhouse, threatened with demolition in 1983, was returned to the property at Third and E Streets through the efforts of the Encinitas Historical Society, the Encinitas School District and members of the community.  It is situated at its approximate original location, though facing south now rather than east towards the town.  Restored, it presently houses the Encinitas Historical Society.

Old Richland Schoolhouse - San Marcos, CA, USA

This New England style schoolhouse was built in 1889 with redwood boards and square nails.  It was originally called Richland School and served the Richland area which eventually became part of San Marcos. Built as a one-room schoolhouse, a second classroom was added in 1890 with one room serving grades one through four and the other serving grades five through eight.  It was the first schoolhouse in San Marcos to have a bell and operated without electricity or running water until the late 1930s.  The school remained in continuous operation until 1947.  It was reopened from 1951 to 1957 to handle an overflow of 2nd and 3rd grade students from the Richmar Elementary School District.  It was purchased in 1966 and turned into a private residence with preservation of the schoolhouse in mind.  Preservation and restoration work continued when it was again sold in 1984 and it was opened as an event venue in 1997.  In 2002 it was leased by Ability Academy who operated it as Old Richland Schoolhouse Events and Applied Scholastics Academy, a private academy for kindergarten through 6th grade, as well as a popular event and wedding venue.  Citing economic difficulties Ability Academy ceased all education and event operations on the property at the end of July 2011.

Addendum October 24, 2011:
On September 1, 2011 San Diego Special Events Co. leased the property.  They have refurbished the schoolhouse and property, and special events and weddings have resumed.

1910 San Marcos Schoolhouse - San Marcos, CA, USA

Built in 1910 by Izaac Hall, the one-room schoolhouse was originally located on San Marcos Boulevard.  It was active as a school through the 1950s, at which time it was abandoned.  Rebuilt in the early 1970s by William Carroll it became the home of a local weekly newspaper, the San Marcos Outlook.  The schoolhouse has been relocated to Grand Avenue where it presently houses a dental office, Softley Dental.

Center City High School - Escondido, CA, USA

When this Mediterranean Revival building first opened in 1925 it was known as Plymouth Hall and was used by the First Congregation Church, adjacent at that time.  It was designed by Louis John Gill, nephew of famous architect Irving Gill, and an original architect of the San Diego Zoo.  Purchased by the Escondido School District in 1959, it served as its district office.  Eventually it became an independent study high school and served in that capacity for 13 years.  The final graduating class of Center City High School was in 2009.  The building is now used as the district's adult education school.
