Sleeping Indian Landscape - Fallbrook, CA, USA

Sleeping Indian Landscape, a mural painted by artist Brett Stokes, is part of Fallbrook Art in Public Places.  It depicts the local geographic feature - the hills in the background - known as "The Sleeping Indian" as the area once looked.  The mural was gifted to the community by the Sutliff Family. 

Located on the southeast corner of the intersection of Hawthorne Street and Main Avenue, facing Hawthorne Street.

The Champion Building - Temecula, CA, USA

This Mission Revival style building was built in 1928 by Allen Champion.  It is constructed of clay bricks from the area of Alberhill, near Elsinore.  The building has housed a variety of businesses and was the home of The Rite Spot Cafe for many years.  From 1974 until 1980 it was the location of the Temecula Post Office.  The building underwent remodeling in 1980.

Wind Dancer - Vista, CA, USA

Wind Dancer, a sculpture by Robert Rochin, is a part of the fourth exhibit of Vista's public art display, Kites Over Vista.  It is on display in downtown Vista from 2011 to 2012.

Located on Main Street just east of the intersection of South Indiana Avenue.

Vista Fire Department-1929 - Vista, CA, USA

Vista Fire Department-1929 is a mural painted by artist Doug Davis.  It was dedicated to the City of Vista by the Vista Village Business Association in 2000.

Located on the east exterior wall of the Curbside Cafe at 307 Main Street.

Back to Basics - Vista, CA, USA

Back to Basics, a sculpture by Daniel Perez, is a part of the fourth exhibit of Vista's public art display, Kites Over Vista.  It is on display in downtown Vista from 2011 to 2012.

Radcliff Service Station - Rainbow, CA, USA

This building was once the Radcliff Service Station, located along an alignment of U.S. Highway 395.  It featured two gas pumps at the front of the overhang.

Dome Gymnasium, Palomar College - San Marcos, CA, USA

The Dome Gymnasium, known as "The Dome," was designed and built in 1958 by architect C. J. "Pat" Paderewski.  Built of brick as the rest of the college buildings were, it features a metal Buckminster Fuller designed geodesic dome roof.  The landmark structure is visible from Mission Road.  Palomar College is San Diego County's oldest Community College.

Located on the campus of Palomar College at 1140 West Mission Road.

Treescape Mural - Fallbrook, CA, USA

Treescape, a mural painted in 1998 by artist Debbie Sievers, is a part of Fallbrook Art in Public Places.  Depicting an oak tree, it was painted to commemorate the Fallbrook Save Our Forest Treescape Project which added over 1000 new trees to Fallbrook in 1998. 

Faded over time from exposure to the elements, the mural is slated to be replaced by a burnished metal sculpture of an oak tree.  Roots, the new sculpture by artist Melissa Ralston, will cover the same wall and will measure 18' by 21'.  A fundraiser is scheduled for March 17, 2012 to generate funds for the project.

El Real Hotel - Fallbrook, CA, USA

Built in 1930, this brick building in downtown Fallbrook was originally the El Real Hotel.  It has housed several businesses since the old hotel closed including a restaurant, The Packing House.  It is presently occupied by JJ Landers Irish Pub.

The wood trim above the window is not original to the building.

Located at 125 South Main Avenue.

Bearfoot in the Park - Fallbrook, CA, USA

A part of Fallbrook Art in Public Places, Bearfoot in the Park is a 1996 bronze sculpture by artist Nancy Scott.

Located outside The Village Square at the southeast corner of Main Avenue and Alvarado Street.

Old Jail - Temecula, CA, USA

The small two-story building referred to as the Old Temecula Jail was never actually intended or used for that purpose.  The walls are constructed of one-foot thick scrap granite from the quarries that were once active in the area.  It is believed to have been built by the Weltys and used as a storehouse for their neighboring store and hotel in the Welty Building.  A water tank sat on the top of the structure providing water pressure for the hotel.  Later, when Joe Winkels' saloon occupied the Welty Building, the granite building was probably used as a wine cellar.  It is thought to have been used occasionally as a temporary holding cell for drunken patrons, hence the reference to a jail.

Located just west of Front Street, and south of Main Street in the courtyard behind the Welty Building.  Access from Main Street and from the public parking lot one block south.

Welty Building - Temecula, CA, USA

Built in the 1890s by R.J. Welty and his wife, Mary, the building originally housed a store on the ground floor and rooms for rent on the second floor. 
It was purchased by Joe Winkels in 1902 and operated as a hotel, The Ramona Inn.  A barber shop and saloon replaced the store area and alcohol was illegally sold there during the prohibition era.  Gaming was offered in the form of pool tables, card games and slot machines.  Boxers Jack Dempsey, Jim Jeffries and Jack Sharkey were among those who trained at an upstairs boxing arena.  Buster Keaton, Fatty Arbuckle and other celebrities from Hollywood were known to visit The Ramona Inn.

On Christmas Eve 1907 Temecula's constable, Preston Van Swanguen, and a local businessman, Louis Escallier, were shot to death by Horace Magee while attempting to quell a barroom fight.

In later years the saloon was named The Stallion, and then The Stables.  A sandwich shop, The Corner, was located in the building in the 1970s.
The Welty Building was among the buildings in the historic district that were damaged in 1993 by a 3-foot-high wall of mud that resulted from the flooding of nearby Murrieta Creek.  It remained empty for years afterward.
The Temecula Olive Oil Company, a food and gift shop featuring a tasting bar, has occupied the ground floor since 2002.

Bonjour - Fallbrook, CA, USA

Bonjour, a bronze sculpture by artist Celou Bonnet, was placed in October 2000 and is a part of Fallbrook Art in Public Places.  It depicts a little boy wearing a baseball cap, with a band-aid on one knee, holding a bunny.

Located at The Village Square at the southeast corner of Main Avenue and Alvarado Street.

Veterans Honor Roll Wall - Fallbrook, CA, USA

Guardians of Freedom, a 2004 bronze plaque by artist Christopher Pardell, is a part of Fallbrook Art in Public Places.

It is the centerpiece of the Fallbrook Veterans Honor Roll Wall.

Located on the exterior wall of The Village Square on the corner of Main Avenue and Alvarado Street.  (Alvarado, just east of Main.)

Old Richland Schoolhouse - San Marcos, CA, USA

This New England style schoolhouse was built in 1889 with redwood boards and square nails.  It was originally called Richland School and served the Richland area which eventually became part of San Marcos. Built as a one-room schoolhouse, a second classroom was added in 1890 with one room serving grades one through four and the other serving grades five through eight.  It was the first schoolhouse in San Marcos to have a bell and operated without electricity or running water until the late 1930s.  The school remained in continuous operation until 1947.  It was reopened from 1951 to 1957 to handle an overflow of 2nd and 3rd grade students from the Richmar Elementary School District.  It was purchased in 1966 and turned into a private residence with preservation of the schoolhouse in mind.  Preservation and restoration work continued when it was again sold in 1984 and it was opened as an event venue in 1997.  In 2002 it was leased by Ability Academy who operated it as Old Richland Schoolhouse Events and Applied Scholastics Academy, a private academy for kindergarten through 6th grade, as well as a popular event and wedding venue.  Citing economic difficulties Ability Academy ceased all education and event operations on the property at the end of July 2011. 

Located on a hilltop on 4.4 parklike acres on the NW corner of Woodland Parkway and Mission Road.

Addendum October 24, 2011:
On September 1, 2011 San Diego Special Events Co. leased the property.  They have refurbished the schoolhouse and property, and special events and weddings have resumed.

Santa Fe Crossing Main - Fallbrook, CA, USA

Muffler Man - Vista, CA, USA

In August of 2004 I pulled into the parking lot in front of Ed's Giant Muffler with the intention of snapping a quick photo of the Muffler Man from the window of my vehicle.  As I was pulling in two individuals in a white truck had just exited the lot.  They made an abrupt u-turn and rushed back into the lot and blocked my vehicle, wanting to know what I was up to.  That is their white truck reflected in the window.  The older one, whom I presume must have been Ed, seemed quite irritated that I had momentarily stopped in a parking lot shared by a number of businesses to take a photo of the giant Muffler Man he had on prominent display in front of his shop instead of buying one of his mufflers. 

By March of 2007 the shop was simply called Giant Muffler and had been renovated.  The Muffler Man had been repainted, his shirt in black and yellow checks.  By July of 2009 the Muffler Man was gone, and his whereabouts are still unknown.  Another business now occupies this location.

Addendum, April 18, 1012: 
Roadsideamerica.com is reporting that Vista's Muffler Man was moved to Rocky Point, NC in August of 2007.

Avo Theatre - Vista, CA, USA

The Avo Theatre was originally a neighborhood movie house.  Designed by architect S. Charles Lee, it opened in December 1948 and featured an avocado shaped lobby.  After closing as a movie theater it was purchased by the City of Vista in 1995 and the interior was modified to accommodate live performances.  Moonlight Stage Productions produces Moonlight at the Avo, a series of performances there each winter.  Renamed the Avo Playhouse, it is available to rent for performances and special events.
